What should I buy my host family in Costa Rica?
I am going to Costa Rica next week and will be living with a host family. I have heard that it is very important to bring a gift and something from where you are from is appropriate. I grew up and live in Los Angeles but I have no idea what to bring. Any ideas?

Gift ideas for host family in Costa Rica?
I’m traveling to Costa Rica next month and I would be interested in what kind of things do Costa Ricans like to recieve as presents from Europe .(I’m from Hungary)

  Take them some really good paprika. It’s very “typical Hungarian”, but it is also quite useful for Central American cooking.
  
  Alcohol can also be good, if (a) you know that the host family drinks the stuff, and (b) you have room in your carry-on luggage (or are brave enough to put it in your checked luggage). I’m thinking some good barackpálinka, Egri bikavér, Tokaji aszu, or similar — again going for the “typical Hungarian” aspect.
  
  A third idea would be some sort of folk art – say, a set of embroidered table linens or curtains, or if you can’t afford/don’t have room for that much, a couple of nice doilies or table runners. Non-size-specific clothing such as an apron can also work, but blouses and vests are iffy if you don’t personally know the host family. Just make sure it’s actually hand-made and Hungarian, because Costa Ricans do pretty nice embroidery themselves, so they’ll probably recognize a machine-embroidered (or worse, Chinese-made) cheap knockoff. (I’m emphasizing the embroidery because it transports well, but you can also look into wooden carvings or the like.)

What would be a good gift to take to my host family in Costa Rica?
I will be living with them for 4 weeks. The family consists of mom, dad, and 4 year old daughter. I have thought about brownie mix and measuring cups, because I have several hispanic friends who had never tried brownies or even knew what they were, until I baked them for them. I got the idea of adding measuring cups from another website.

This wouldn’t be all I would take. So please, any ideas would be a GREAT help!

  well im Costa Rican-American and when ever we go visit my family we always bring them snickers chocolate bars and other american candies lol i know it sounds a little odd but yea my grandmother and all my family really loves them lol i dont remember if they have snickers bars in costa rica but if they do im sure they are probably too expensive for the average Costa Rican (my family lives in a very poor area in San Jose so yea when i say “average” i mean that type of people)
  
  -a word of advice though….if the family is stable financially (meaning they have a nice house, nice things, have their children in private schools, their own cars and live in a good neighborhood) then i wouldn’t want to take the chance of offending them by bring them american candy….if they CAN afford the candy then it would be a bit insulting to bring them something that they can get themselves ( but that doesnt apply to all gift…i dont know if im explaining myself correctly lol)
  
  - but if you see that they are a humble, modest family (like mine) then im sure they would be more than grateful to have such a luxury that is american candy.
  
  - u know what….to be on the safe side, you could bring them boxes of good quality chocolates like those assorted chocolates form Godiva and Ghirardelli. That way it shows your giving them something extra special (nothing cheap) and it wont insult them either way (and im sure the little girl will love chocolate…i mean, who wouldnt … ) AND it really wont cost you too too much when you think about it. So yea …you cant go wrong with mixed cocoa lol
  
  - u could also buy the little girl a really nice coloring book (not something you picked up at a dollar store…like my mom usually does for my little cousins *eye roll* ) like a huge book and a box of Crayola color pencils, markers, crayons …a whole coloring kit lol. If you win over the baby of the house you’ll win over the entire family …trust me lol
  
  -or a really nice Barbie or any popular doll from Toys R Us with some nice accessories (again try not to be too cheap about it…im only saying that cuz of my experience with my mother lol)

How supportive is a host family as a homestay in Costa Rica?
I am traveling to Costa Rica from Central Europe next month and I would like to know more about Costa Ricans, their family lives, habits, behavior.
Everything which is unusual for a European and could seem like to be a challenge to get used to in the beginning.

  They will make everything they can to make you feel like part of the family. Costa Ricans are very simple. They like to eat good, they love entertainment like going to the movies or watching movies at home, they like to dance, they like karaoke and they like going to the beach. Most of them are Catholic or Christian so they are strong believers of Jesus. They beleive in good and bad karma. One thing you will have to get used to is eating rice with black beans almost everyday. You will see fruits juices that youve never seen before like Fresco de Cas. You will enjoy it.

Souvenirs for a family in Costa Rica?
I’m staying in a host family in Costa Rica for a week. I would like to bring some souvenirs for them from the states, but I have no idea what to get.

I thought about chocolates and other treats from the US, but I have seen them in Costa Rica too.
I want to get something they will like but they cannot get in Costa Rica.
I remember my Brazilian friend went crazy for Victoria Secrets’ body lotion. She says it is hard to get and very expensive in her country.
Does anybody know any products that are popular in Costa Rica and easier/cheaper to get them in the state?

By the way, I’m on budget and I prefer something small and easy to carry.

  They would flip over any kind of “decent” body lotions and body sprays! Even those little “Travel” sizes you can find in our Drug and Grocery stores!
  
  I always take several to the ladies I know in Costa Rica and they really go bananas over them!
  
  Costa Rica really does not produce any of these to any great extent and they have to import the little that they have – then when their import taxes go into effect on them – they become priceless and out of reach!

  Bring something that is common where you live that would be new and interesting for your Tico family. I’m from Tennessee so I brought my family BBQ sauce, a calendar with pictures of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, and some local Jack Daniels whiskey. This was for a mom, dad, and two young adults though. Try to think of something two girls and baby would like where you are from that would be different to the Ticos.

What are the cultural differences between Costa Rica and the United States?
I’m going to be going on an exchange to Costa Rica from the US in about two weeks. I’d like to know any major cultural differences as well as any ideas for gifts to my host family that they wouldn’t normally have in Costa Rica but we have here in the US?

  I am from Costa Rican parents and was born and raised in the States, so have I was brought up with both cultures simultaneously. Here are a few tibits: 1) Costa Rica has come a LONG way from when I was growing up. They have Walmarts and Home Depots as well as McDonalds and Burger Kinds, so when thinking about taking gifts to someone in CR, really think about something that screams America. What city do you live in? Perhpas something significant of your city or state. 2) a large majority of Costa Ricans, especially 40 and below, speak English. Some because of schooling while others because of work (international companies, call centers, tourism). 3) Ticos-nickname for Costa Ricans, are very friendly and helpful. They love politics, they love their country, they love soccer and they love to socialize. Parks and pubs are always packed with people on any given day of the week. 4) Respect your elders. 5) Very catholic (we have a patron Virgin Mary-The Virgin of Los Angeles, who appeared to a young child on a stream in the city of Cartago. There’s now a beautiful cathedral built there which is a must see. I have tons of information. Let me know if you need anything else.

What would be some good calling cards while in Costa Rica?
My gf is going to Costa Rica for 9 days and I want to get her a calling card so she can call me while shes there. We live in Alabama and would it matter if I used the calling card to call her or she use it from her hosts family house phone to call me?

16 and traveling to Costa Rica for one month alone to volunteer. Tips, interesting places, good shopping?
I’m flying to Costa Rica on the 7th, living with a host family, and volunteering 8 hours on weekdays at an orphanage in San Jose. I’ve completed AP Spanish so I’m almost fluent, and am very independent and all that junk , just wondering if anyone could give me any tips on what to expect,a nd cool places to go and things to do. I really want to see the real Costa Rica, not the watered down tourist areas.

  Well, aren’t you lucky! I think you’ll be shocked at the poverty–I was. Even the people with money don’t flaunt it like we do here. San Jose is a dirty city–the sidewalks have huge holes in them–always watch where you walk. Be careful in certain areas and don’t go out alone. It will be unbelievably hot and humid, so take clothes that “breathe.” Take plenty of bug spray too. I didn’t find the food to be very good, but you can always find something to eat. You can see some pretty mountains from San Jose. Try to take a trip to Poas volcano. It’s very close and impressive. Truly, just a 15 minute drive outside of the city it’s like a whole different country–it’s beautiful, so try to take as many day trips as you can. Try to visit the Selva Verde Rainforest Reserve and Tortguero National Park if possible. Try to visit a cloud forest too. Don’t forget Manuel Antonio Park. (Some of these are hours away from San Jose). Try to visit the town of Fortuna and Arenal Volcano. Try to get to a coffee plantation. If you’re only able to stay close to San Jose, you won’t feel like you visited CR when you return…try your best to see the country while you’re there.
  
  As for shopping, I didn’t find any bargains. I thought the street markets offered the best stuff at the best prices.
  
  The kids are so adorable and they all wear uniforms to school. I joked though that every time we passed a school, the kids were outside at recess. They actually have to go to school longer than we do in the US. You’ll see bars on all the windows. It was a culture shock to me and I’ve done some traveling…have a blast!

Host family gift Costa Rica?
I am going to Costa Rica in a couple of days and have been having trouble thinking up something to bring for my host family. According to my teachers it could be something small, they reccomended Applets and Cottlets but they are not in season here. We were also thinking a book on Spokane, however I would like some other suggestions. I want to know something for either the entire host family or for the host sister who will be showing me around. She is 13. Thanks.

I don’t want anything extravagant, but I would like to show my appreciation and hopefully give them something very US that they would appreciate.

  American Candies, such as something in a tin or a bag. Chocolates may not travel well. You might also think of bringing fancy American cookies, such as Peperidge farm, distinctive collection, then there are various types in one box for the family to try and enjoy. I think that is usually well recieved. If you are looking for something more expense, go for something that represents American history or heritage, such as a mini statue of liberty, but a nice one nothing too tacky. A peice of fine china, like a Lenox brand candy dish, may be a good gift, which is not too expensive, but something they may appreciate and they will remember you by, even after you leave. That is what I would bring. You may even find something in your local department store, in the home section that would hopefully be appreciated. Tough call, but it sounds like you are on the right track. If you can afford much go for the box of cookies, everyone loves that.

Does anyone have any comments about studying abroad in Costa Rica?
I have not applied yet, but I am intending to study abroad in Costa Rica at Veritas Universidad. I will be living with a host family so that I can practice my Spanish. I am not really sure where Veritas is or what it is like to live there so any comments and/or advise are welcomed. Thank-you!
Also any suggestions about how to fit in and what to expect in a Costa Rican home are greatly appreciated.

  Veritas is a wonderful university. The students there are really nice in general and artsy and cool. Got lotsa friends there and theyre always welcoming to other people.
  
  Veritas is located in Zapote, which is like 2 minutes away from San Pedro, a major district with lots of entertainment, shopping, bars, etc.. Not the safest part in Costa Rica, but youll be ok if you take care and dont hang out there alone.
  
  It´s about 5 minutes away from the Capital San Jose, which isn´t really a pretty sight, but I guess it can be convenient at times. Living there in Los Yoses-Zapote is generally nice. Quiet yet pretty much as urban as costa rica can be, dangerous when you dont know your way around, when youre on your on, and at night. But mostly cool place with many nice cool people.
  
  To fit in Costa Rica, don´t talk like USA is the greatest thing to ever have happened in the world. Cause, well, it gets annoying and its rude to kinda be talked to as less of a person or country. Don´t dress with shorts, a sweatshirt and flip flops all the time, thats too stereotypical tourist. If youre under 21 and its your first time drinking, dont drink too much or be slutty, cause thats generally not appreciated worldwide I guess. After meeting people a couple of times, in friend basis, its ok to greet with a kiss cheek to cheek. Don´t ask for american beers at bars. drink local!Be corteous and open minded. Study hard at school, its a very hard one! and just enjoy your stay!
  
  As of what to expect in a Costa Rican home, its very relative, in general, be polite, respect curfews if there are any, taste the food before you reject it. Do nice things like making your bed or washing the dishes every so often.

  Well, although it may say “small gift”remember that this family will be your son’s family for a few weeks and they will treat your son as one of their one. So as a token of your appreciation you can send some nice, small things together with a letter ot thanks you note, from mother to mother, thanking her for taking good care of your son.
  Coffee table books are always appreciated, specially if they are from your state, or show something about your history, local flora and fauna, etc. If there’s a dad or boys in the house, nice Tshirts with a sport logo, etc. Things from your homeland, things which mean something to you. For the mum something nice like a perfume or body lotion, and then I would suggest sending some smaller gifts which your son could give to any friend he makes while living in Costa Rica. Like baseball caps, or other tshirst, or some nice cd’s, anything for 16 years old. You never know how many friends your son will make while there so better be prepared and have something. Maybe some sweets, boxes of chocolates, anything small.
  Costa Rica is not a forsaken country in the middle of the jungle so no towels are needed! And by the way, there are Victoria Secret products down there!!!!

I am planning on returning to my host family in Costa Rica…?
and was wondering if it is considered polite to bring gift(s) to the family, who I lived with for 6 six two summer’s ago. They are not very well off, and I know that taking me own even for only a few days as an extra mouth to feed will be a financial burden. However, I don’t want to insult their pride and show up with gifts if you know what I mean. Thanks very much!

  I have visited my host fmaiy with whom I lived with for six months. I bring gifts just to say how much I missed them and appreciate what they do. For the girls I bring nice smelling lotions, perfumes, etc. For the men a multitool is always an option. I also like to bring good chocolate and different candy becasue it is fun. If there are any fmaily members who are children, bring a toy. I always like to bring out the gifts after dinner or during a relaxed time so it is not a bribe, but a thanks for your hospitality. Ball caps with logos are popular as well as commuter mugs (it keeps the beer cold)! Good luck and enjoy your trip! Oh, I have also gifted my family with camaras and they loved them, I’d never seen smiles wider than theirs. Check for Costco’s cheap summer camaras.

Has anyone had a teenage child attend CPI spanish school in Heredia, Costa Rica? How did you like it?
I am wondering about the experience for a 15 year old girl to fly to the school and attend a soccer Spanish immersion camp and stay with a host family? She would be flying alone but picked up by the school staff. I would love to hear about any experiences with the school, especially for high school students going on their own.

  if she really wants to and she decides to go, let her go. but remember, she is a teenager and she is leaving behind all her friends. costa rica is a very safe country and heredia is beautiful, so for that it is fine for her to go alone. i have never gone there to the CPI school tho. make sure she has some basic spanish at least so her life is easier. she will probably find many english-speaking people. no worries! good luck!

What should I bring my host family in Costa Rica?
They live on a small farm. There is a mother who is 38, and we are considering bringing her an apron from Anthropologie, which are about 38 dollars, and very nice. The husband is a driver, and he is 45, I don’t know what to bring him. There is an 18 year old boy, and again, I don’t know what to bring him. There is a 12 year old girl, should i bring her something like nail polish, or slippers( cute girly ones)? And last, there is an 8 year old girl, and I am thinking to get her something similar to what I get the 12 year old. And last, I am thinking to get them a family gift of linens or towels. My mom lived in a foreign country, and was poor when she was young, so she thinks towels would be nice. It is most likely that the family is very poor, so I will NOT be bringing candy or coffee, or gift baskets, I would like to bring something nice and useful. Also, I’m a girl and 14, if it makes a difference. thank you

  I USED TO LIVE THERE…NO COFFEE THEY HAVE PLENTY. NICE CLOTHING WILL BE FINE. IS VERY EXPENSIVE OVER THERE. NICE BOOTS FOR THE 48 YEAR OLD AND HE WILL BE YOUR FRIEND FOREVER . FOR THE 18 YEAR OLD SOME SOCCER STUFF THEY LOVE FOOTBALL SOCCER ( YOU HAVE NO IDEA EVEN WOMENS). TRUST ME I KNOW THEM.

Is 14 years old too young to spend 4 weeks in costa rica alone? I will be with a host family, and go to school for most of the day. We are never unsupervised. is it a bad idea? I am very independent.

  Not a bad idea, but you must be careful when going out. It’s not as safe as you would think. Also, don’t expect many amenities. Your host family (depending on how rich they are) may not have hot water, air conditioning (probably won’t need it), a car, cable, internet, etc. But you won’t die going 4 weeks without facebook. LOL
  
  It will definitely be a great cultural and educational learning experience.

Hi i signed up to go on a tour of costa rica with a group of friends and a whole other group of people. I’m a vegetarian by choice is this going to be a problem. i will be staying with a host family..do costa ricans eat a lot of seafood and meat?.. lol please say no..

  it depend on what part of costa rica you go to. close to puerto viejo at the carribean they serve quite a bit of seafood. you can get SOME beef and lots of chicken in costa rica but dont forget you in the jungle. so youll eat lots of fruit.
  
  no matter where you go tho, be prepared to eat lots of beans, rice, watermelon and pinapple. of course mango and banana!
  but it wont be a problem. the tours are accostumed to vegitarians.
  
  dont be nervous, the place is drop dead gorgeous. enjoy, wish ya the best of luck…

it it a stupid idea? i know things will be closed for xmas eve & day but not the weekend after right becus im going from the 19th to 28th and my last 2 days i wanted to go to arenal volcano and manuel antonio….so can anyone tell me wut its like to travel to san jose costa rica during christmas week? im volunteering in an orphanage and stayin with a host family thank u

  Do it ! It’s a wonderful time of year there. The Christmas festivities last all month long. Every town has a Fiesta going on each afternoon/evening. The holiday feeling is contagious, you will love it.
  By the way, forget Manuel Antonio National Park,..too overcrowded, panhandlers all over the place. But hey, if you just have to see it, of course go. A few gorgeous beaches, nice hiking trails, it’s just hard to enjoy with all the people, singles, couples and large groups and their guides, yacking up a storm. Arenal of course, is a must. Stay at the Arenal Observatory Lodge if you can,..es muy importante !

Radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh has thrown down the gauntlet. If the U.S. Congress passes health care reform, Limbaugh will leave the country to receive his medical treatment.

Specifically, Limbaugh told a caller that he envisions traveling to Costa Rica should the government, through a federal program costing upwards of $1 trillion, expand health care coverage to approximately 30 million Americans who are currently uninsured.

  He is throwing a tantrum because he wants people to eat health care cake. Why did he not move to Nigeria when Bush was running up the national debt fighting the Iraq War? Aren’t all budget deficits the same? Further, conservatives argue that government spending does not decrease unemployment. Did they forget the fact that the Reagan economic boom of the 1980′s was financed by government deficit spending on weapons? Southern California, which has many defense industries, experienced an economic boom under Reagan because of increased defense spending. It would appear to me that the conservatives have a double standard. They only object to deficit spending if it is not done to finance wars or weapons.

Has the Travel Channel host Andrew Zimmern ever been to Costa Rica?
I would like to know, because I was in Costa Rica for a bit,,..,.,.,.,.. and on the front cover was an article with a picture of andrew zimmern on it… and his name… but since it was all in spanish, I couldnt read it…. and didnt ask anyone for a translation (stupid me…)
also, if you wouldnt mind… maybe send a link to the episode or something? maybe an airing date?

  I learned about it in a history book probably.
  I did mission work here, and also went out to a beautiful island right off the shore of Costa Rica.
  I liked scuba diving and looking at the star fish.
  Costa Rica is many different colors… when you are in the slums everything is brown, even the water, because people take dumps right into the canals in plain site. This is because they have no running water… everything is mud and they are all dirty and half naked from no showers or clothes.
  However, I have seen some amazing beaches and forests in Costa Rica also.
  One line – Rich with beauty and torn with poverty.
  The fact that it has no military makes it different from every country.

  I agree with the advice on Spanish. Just about everybody uses Usted, not tu. Adults even call children by Usted.
  
  As far as safety, CR (especially San Jose) has become unsafe. Those who claim that it is safe are dillusional. It is not 1995, it’s 2010. Things have changed. In San Jose, if you choose to go out after dark (~6pm), use a taxi, even if only for a couple of blocks. As bad as the recession is here, it’s worse there. Desperate times. Try to be with at least 1 other person at all times. During the day, it’s mostly pickpocketing, but at night the real criminals come out. Take common sense precautions. No jewelry AT ALL. Don’t even take it with you, leave it all at home. No flashing cash in public, only carry a few dollars that you’ll need for the next day or two. Things like Ipods, MP3 players, laptops, digital cameras, and digital anything are in high demand.

san jose COSTA RICA! help?
My close friend and I are traveling to San Jose Costa Rica for three weeks, living with a host family for speaks Spanish (we don’t speak any) We are going on an abroad volunteer program so we will spend our days working in orphanages etc, but nights and weekends are free for us to go about and explore. Kasie and I are the youngest in the group (both just turning 17 before we leave in July) and I was told not to expect group traveling, normally the volunteers are in their 26′s and don’t plan to travel around with everyone else in their spare time…

ive been reading so much saying its dangerous in san jose ect and now im freaking out a little!!

how bad is it? what do we need to look at for, where should and shouldnt we go…and what about us wondering around exploring the night life….help?

  it is dangerous but, san jose is a big city like any where else
  you may get mugged or jumped but only in some areas
  i go to san jose once a while to clubs and bars around it and thats different
  but when you travel at night, do it on taxi
  don’t go walking, unless some one that you trust and knows san jose areas.
  just be aware and be careful, it may happened here or any where in the world
  also don’t wear any jewelery and the money, try not to show it on the public
  i use to work as a tour guide here and i really understand lots of things about that
  when i go to different places and tourist are around…
  and i see weird things around? i give them advices
  lots of times is when they pay for something like the ferry fare or at a local store, they open there wallet and get all money out
  i understand that most of them don’t get the currency fast, but try to use only like 10 000 colones (that is like $20) on you, thats enough to eat and travel ok. the rest keep it some where else

I am 15 (kinda almost 16) and I will be leaving in July to go to Costa Rica for year. It’s kinda like an exchange so I will be staying with a host family. I will most likely be in the city, San Jose or the outskirts of the city. Can anybody tell me anything interesting or have any suggestions? What’s the weather like? The people? The food?

  Costa Rica is so amazing. My great grandparents, great uncle, and aunt lived there for about 30 years. There is a rainy season and a dry season, so for about half of the year it will be pretty wet. Costa Ricans are considered to be the most polite people in Central America. They are extremely helpful and nice for the most part. Be careful in San Jose though, because valuables can easily be stolen even if they are in a backpack/purse. There are cases of people’s bags being cut open and their belongings were stolen. Costa Rica has mountains, rainforests, and two ocean coasts, so the environment changes a lot depending on where you go. Costa Rica is one of my favorite countries that I’ve been to, so you’ll have fun.

Why does the World Cup always take place in different countries, but the Gold Cup is always in the US?
I know it’s not always there, but they almost exclusively host it. Mexico could host it more often. Canada could host it. Costa Rica and a whole bunch of other countries. It’s not such a big tournament. For some reason it even seems that Mexico plays all of its friendlies in the US. I could not picture England playing all of its friendlies in Scotland.

  Land Rovers for the ones I’ve known. First, you need to check the laws on what is allowed in the country. They have some very odd rules on numbers of batteries and rolls of film and electronics. There may also be huge taxes on some items. Vehicles can run up to 70% of the original value. The taxing authority determines the Original value.

  go the the state website. they have visas for students to do pretty much what you’re talking about doing. It doesn’t have to be a formal program, like with a college or anything.
  
  It’s a poor country so you better have enough money for your stay. finding work will be very hard.

Could someone give me reassurance and/or advice about studying abroad in Costa Rica?
In 12 days, I’m leaving for a month-long Spanish immersion program in Costa Rica. I’m ridiculously excited, but at the same time extremely nervous.
The program that my college works with, ICADS, has sent out a couple guides about culture shock, staying with the host family, and general information about San Jose/Costa Rica, but I’m still very jittery and worried.
Could someone who has been there please offer some advice that they wish they knew before going there, or just some positive feedback about their trip? I know this is something I want to do and I am so ready to go…it’s not that I’m immature and really ought not to go, I’m totally prepared. Buuuuuut there’s that part of me that wants all the reassurance I can get! Haha.

If you don’t have anything reasonable, truthful or respectful to say, don’t say it. I don’t want to hear it. I’m not saying I want nice, positive answers only- if you have something that is honestly negative about your personal experience or something you have heard from a reputable source, by all means share. Just don’t waste my time by answering “no idea” or “don’t do it” so you can get 2 points. I asked for advice and reassurance from people who have experience with this, not for insincere answers from trolls.

  Costa Rica has a stable, democratic government that isn’t dominated by drug lords. It’s a beautiful country and I envy you.
  
  There is no better way to learn a language than through an immersion program like you describe. I studied French in Senegal and Spanish in Mexico, and I can assure you that you’ll find warm, friendly people, competent teachers, and understanding guides.
  
  The real culture shock will be when you go to the Kentucky Fried Chicken or Burger King outlet in San José. You’ll cringe and say, “How could they do this to such a beautiful culture?”
  
  Read up on local history and places to visit (which may or not be tourist attractions, depending on your tastes and interests). Keep an open mind, be patient (some things may take longer in CR than in USA, or you may have to do without some things you now take for granted), and have a good time.

im 18 and im thinking about going to san jose to volunteer with children for 7 days. i will be staying with a host family.

i tried finding ppl to go with me but nobody has the money so is it a good idea to go by myself? what are some pros and cons to doing this all by myself. and will i still have fun ziplining and stuf like that if i go alone? thanks

  If you volunteer through a group (most likely a terrible rip-off, shamefully overpriced) they will put you in contact with a coordinator here and you will be in contact with the volunteer group all the time. You’ll find someone to go with you on trips.
  
  You would do more people more good coming down as a straight tourist and spend a lot less money. But that money would be spread around in Cost Rica. All the pay-to-be-a-volunteer things I’ve seen are scams. You pay extra for everything and spend about zero time doing something useful. Seems odd to me how so many gringos come to C.R. to be ripped of by other gringos.

I’m leaving for Costa Rica on Saturday and I would like some ideas on gifts that I can bring to them while I’m staying in there home, studying abroad. I know its a married couple with no kids at home. My first thought was a good American wine but I couldn’t think of any! Costa Rica or Quebec: Which is a better deal?
I am considering two study abroad options. I am learning both French and Spanish, but I’m unsure which would help more. One is to Quebec City at the Universitie Laval. It is 6 credits and lasts about 1 month and 1 day. I would be staying in the dorms there. The cost is around $4500 including transportation, meals, tuition, etc. My other option is in Heredia, Costa Rica at the Universidad Nacional. It is also 6 credits but lasts for 1 month and two weeks. The cost for that is around $3600 including transportation, meals, tuition, housing, etc. I would be staying with a host family there. If anyone has personal experiences about the schools or the countries/cities, that would be great.

Is the food in Costa Rica really as bland and plain as many people say?
I’m planning on spending a year in Costa Rica…but I’m a little worried about food. Food is a big deal for me. I enjoy flavorful foods, savory foods, hearty foods, etc. But from what many people say, it seems like the food of Costa Rica is very bland, plain and (I don’t know if it is, but this is what some people say) not very good. If I live with a host family, how often will I be eating Gallo Pinto? What other types of foods do Ticos eat? Is there a good variety or is it basically the same food at every meal, ex. rice, beans, plantains, and a meat.

  ABSOLUTELY NOT. I often go to costa rica. Nosara, specifically and from my experience the food is absolutely amazing. If you live with a host family then YES gallo pinto will likely be served but it is quite tasty because there are different varieties of gallo pinto. Also, the fruit is amazing and they will likely make many fruit drinks and such. If you like spices and such bring hot sauce or buy some local groceries. Typical dishes in costa rica include gallo pinto but thin flat pizza is also common, SO DELICIOUS. A casado is another typical costa rican dish composed of many different items. Costa Rica is famous for their ensalada mixtas so if you like salad you are in for a real treat. They combine everything from hearts of palm to avacado and they are just so delicious. For dessert there are crepes and ice cream and it is usually very good. Also, if you like seafood ceviche is amazing. It is a very common dish and it includes shrimp or camarones or fish with a salsa kind of dip and it is amazing. I am very jealous that you are going there prepare to have the time of your life and get healthy!

What should I get my girlfriend for her Costa Rica trip this summer?
My girlfriend is going on a school trip to Costa Rica for two weeks this summer. She is a French Minor but doesn’t really know Spanish at all, just a little I taught her that I remembered from high school. I want to get her something for this trip like Rosetta Stone software so she can learn to talk to her host family when she gets there but I never imagined it was $300!

I was hoping you all would help and give me some ideas that would make her stay there easier.

  ALl the digital translators I have seen / used are really not worth the effort to use, so people do not use them.
  
  Give her a copy of the University of Chicago Spanish English, English SPanish dictionary and give it to her as soon as possible. Have her read the material before the word lists start (ENglish to Spanish of course but have her try the Spanish to ENglish material as well.)
  
  If you can get a local SPanish newspaper, daily or weekly and translate some articles word by word (not always possible) as well as read for general understanding.
  
  And a bottle of sun block.

i want to do a homestay or language study in costa rica but…?
but it would be the summer before my senior year in high school and i dont want it to ruin my cross country season. if i went the first 3 weeks of summer i would be missing the first 2 weeks of xc which is mostly just getting out and running 45-60 minutes. if i go through a program what are the chances that they could match me with a host family that has a runner in the family i could run with if i requested it? basically i’m asking, is running common in central america, specifically costa rica or is that something that most people dont really do?

Does anyone have a recipe for arroz con piña?
I lived with a host family in Costa Rica for a week and one evening my host mother made “Arroz con Piña.” It was really creamy and pink colored. She said there was fruit flavored gelatin in it as well as rice and pineapple. I’ve lost contact with my host family. I’ve searched everywhere for this recipe. All the recipes I have found weren’t what I had. Does anyone have a recipe for arroz con piña that uses gelatin?

  Costa Rican Arroz con Pina
  
  Ingredients:
  
  3 cups pineapple juice
  1 cup rice (long grain works well)
  1-2 sheet flavored gelatin sheets (or 2 tbsp flavored gelatin powder may be used instead)
  milk (or cream)
  Sugar to taste
  ice
  rum (optional)
  
  Directions:
  
  In half a cup of slightly warmed pineapple juice , add 1-2 sheets of flavored gelatin (strawberry, raspberry, cinnamon, vanilla…) and stir to dissolve.
  The juice can be warmed for 30 sec on medium power in the microwave or on the stove top on low heat. Do NOT boil. Set aside until needed.
  
  Slowly bring the rice and the rest of the pineapple juice to boil. Simmer until rice is well cooked but not dry (approx. 30 minutes).
  
  You want the mixture to be wet and soft, but not runny. Add rice mixture, gelatin/juice mixture, milk, sugar and ice (& rum) to blender.
  
  **use 1 cup milk (or 1/2 cup cream) for every 1/2 cup of rice mixture.
  
  Frappe until smooth and creamy.
  
  For a stronger pineapple taste, add whole pieces of pineapple when blending.
  
  You may adjust ratios and measurements according to personal preferences!

Studying abroad in Costa Rica…ideas to get more involved with the culture?
I am an American college senior and am studying abroad just outside of San Jose. I have in internship at a language school in SJ but just can’t seem to get acquainted with the culture. I mean I speak Spanish abit, and live with a host family. I have been trying to meet people but the people are sort of standoffish-similar to the states. Where could I go to meet local Costa Ricans and make some friends here. Or where are cool places I could go/do around SJ, like really really close.

  Ticos are some of the nicest people. First I would learn some more Spanish and try to integrate within their culture. They say that spending time in the park is a past-time of the Ticos and you should find a park in SJ. Learn more of their culture. Eat at “local” restaurants. The Costa Ricans are very family oriented, perhaps attending a church could also help you meet them. There are also a lot of volunteer opportunities, if you have the time. This site has a lot of information about Costa Rica, the people, their culture. Perhaps it can help you with where to go.

  1) Yeah you’ll have no problem. Just listen to your host family.
  2)There are everywhere, it just depends on what you want. Even the supermarkets sell stuff. So it depends on how much you want to spend.
  3)Depends which bus, regular service from San Jose’ is about $8
  The bus leaves from the Cola Cola Station.
  4)You can usually find a hostel online where you can rent a locker pretty cheap, but bring your own lock.

Anyone know about riots in Costa Rica?
I was walking up towards the ULatina the other day, right outside of San Jose, and I noticed that there were a bunch of kids mobbing the streets, carrying large pieces of pipe and smoking weed (something which I haven’t really seen here outside of puerto viejo). I usually catch a bus up by the university, but I noticed a plume of smoke up ahead and I guess the cops were coming because all of a sudden everyone started yelling and running, so I jumped in a cab instead. In the morning all of the windows of the ULatina building were broken. I was passing by it on the bus and no one even batted an eye. My host family was also pretty nonchalant about it, and said, “yeah, well there was a concert there the other day.” Is this common?

  Its pretty rare. I know of only one other street demonstration that resulted in any damage and a few arrests and that was in the 1980′s. Last night’s riot was more like a party that got out of hand and although there will be no investigation the police probably mishandled things.
  
  Its true that an advertised concert was held in a venue much too small for the predicted crowd. Pretty stupid all around. Notice there was almost no personal violence. Most ticos still avoid physical fighting, except of course for the eager beaver police.

I wanna spend at least a year in college here and there are no dorms. So would i have to buy my own like living place or apartment? I’ve also heard that you may live with a host family?   Where’s your source???? There ARE dorms in UCR, TEC and UNA (the three main Universities in Costa Rica), but they are used for people with low incomes who live outside San José… I don’t know if it is possible for a exchange student to live there. You should ask.

Knitted gift for my Costa Rican host family?
What type of gift (knitted) can I make for a family I’ll be staying with in costa rica over spring break? It’s at the end of March so I’ll have about 3 months to complete it (I’m working on other projects now).

Things to consider:
-I’m 15
-I know nothing about the family
-My skills inclue beginners/intermediate fairsisle work, intermediate/advanced cabling, and I’ve never done a huge project, so an afgan may be too much. I don’t know how to do any lacey stuff.

I’d like something the entire family will enjoy, and I’m not sure what type of members (if they have children or not) will be included. I’m not sure what’s an appropraite gift for the Costa Rican culture, some I need so good pattern ideas Thanks!

  you could make them a scrapbook, with pictures of your favorite places in new york, and like little postcards and ticket stubs and stuff from around the city. Include like a subway map, and clippings from the local newspaper and everything. Also, include menus and recipies from your favorite local recipies, and a guide map through the city that features all your favorite places.
  Go to a scarpbook store and pick out a cute album and cute paper and stickers and put it all together for them. Im sure it would be a fun ice breaker, and they’ll really appreciate how much work and thought you put into it ! <3

I am studying abroad in Costa Rica for a semester and was advised to bring a gift for my family. I have three host sisters (28,28,30) and a mom and dad. I live in Wisconsin. Any ideas that would represent the US/Wisconsin well that they would enjoy?

Foreign Travel for high school aged students?
I really want to to a summer cultural/ language immersion style program but just don’t know which one to choose. I love the idea of being able to room with a couple other people in your group so you aren’t always alone with a host family. Does anyone have any links or references to amazing summer language programs? I’m looking towards going to Spain, Italy, France, or Costa Rica. Thanks!

  I participated in a fabulous program, called HomeStay Spain in SPAIN. After speaking with other kids in the group who had participated in other exchange programs abroad we decided this was the best! If you are interested in a lifestyle immersion experience and willing to learn about Spanish Culture and Lifestyle, this is the most amazing program available. The beautiful and safe town of Santander is known for its cultural refinement, and an atmosphere typical of old Spain. It is so much fun!!! And we learned so much!!!! It was so enriching. I LOVED IT!!! Both my sister and I participated different summers and we had a blast! We made so many good friends we still keep in touch with!
